1.79m: Nine smashes rivals as Maroons defeat Blues
Nine unassailable with a massive 49.2% share, and Origin tieing for the biggest audience of the year.
State of Origin III has delivered massive ratings for Nine with 1.79m metro viewers – the second biggest audience of the year- and a whopping 49.2% share for Nine.
There were 794,000 viewers in Sydney alone, with 567,000 in Brisbane and 234,000 in Melbourne.
Those numbers will climb even higher with regional and BVOD numbers. For comparison, overnight metro numbers were Origin I (1.77m) and Origin II (1.79m).
As always Origin‘s lure left little playroom for other networks.

As a proud New South Welshman, I felt very happy watching last night’s State Of Origin. Because, it made me realise that if Australia is dragged into a war, the enemy will have to attack from the north, and there’s no way any army on earth could ever get through Queensland’s defence.
It was a great game. I needed a valium to slow down my heart and get to sleep. Bloody Queensland.
You made me smile 😁
What would Nine do without their ‘Origin series’. Apparently Origin is also televised live to 91 territories and countries around the world, including a first for Pacific Nations with it being broadcast live and FTA across Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Niue.
I am wondering how many people streamed the Origin game on 9now. Given that the game is a decider, I believe that records will be broken. Fans can use alternate streaming angles so you don’t need to put up with ads and the commentary.
Alternate angles? I didn’t know that.
As Nine have set the standard with 4K with coverage of the Wallabies v England rugby union tests they should have streamed 4K for the Origin series as well.
Nine (and thus Stan) don’t have pay tv rights for the game. Those belongs to Foxtel, and you can place a good bet that they aren’t going to giving up their NRL rights without a fight.
Alternate angles! Hope they were better than the angles Nine had in its coverage.
It was like who ever was directing had no idea of how to do an NRL game. Lots of aerial long distance shots where you couldn’t really see what was happening. Many times they missed incidents in play. Half time higlights were on a screen effect surrounded by advertising . So small you couldn’t see the highlights properly!
Don’t even get me started on the woeful commentary! Nine’s pre game show was just a long promo for upcoming shows and Stan streaming with just a few minutes of prerecorded interviews with coaches. Nothing of pre- game entertainment or info re game! Stop Nine having exclusive rights to State of Origin and Grand Final live. Foxtel and streaming services should also be able to show live!
